will my steering cable off my 1987 merc.mariner 9.9 fit on a 2004 40 mercury

im wanting to know if the rod on the end of my steering cable is long enough to go through the tube on the 40 hp that im looking to buy or will i have to buy all new steering cable to for it???

The rod is a standard length so you should be fine.
