2001 Mercury 115HP Salt Water Series - maintenance?

I noticed the other day that there is a hose with a strange connection lying on the bottom of the outboard engine (2001 Mercury 115HP Salt Water Series):




Tracing the hose back (it's long) and connects to the brass fittings at the top of the motor:




I assume therefore it connects into the cooling system and is perhaps for flushing out? I have been using a set of 'bunny ears' on the motor for years. Am I doing something wrong? What's it for?

2001 Mercury 115HP Salt Water Series - maintenance?

I have a 2001 Mercury 115HP Salt Water Series. I've owned it for about 3 years and during that time I have done very little maintenance to it. It's used for about 20 hours a year and I generally only do the following:

* new spark plugs annually
* grease all the grease nipple points that I can find
* check for any rubbing on the wiring and hoses
* check for any corrosion
* keep the engine bay clean
* top up the self mixing oil tank when filling up the petrol tank

With the motor now being at 120ish hours and 13 years old, is there any other preventative maintenance that I should be doing?

You should be installing a new waterpump impeller.

nope. water pump good idea though I expect you've done that a couple of times

You are correct..its a engine flush
