So I'm starting a new thread so to fill ppl in on what's been going one first I started with a 1970 mercury 500 that came with a boat I bought, well as precaution I also bought a 1969 mercury 500 for parts, I started by trying to figure out why the 1970 what underpowered and wouldn't plane after a compression check and further investigation I found heavy scoring on the number 4 piston. So I decided to try and get the 1969 up and running I spent about a half day replacing the parts I borrowed from it, did a compression check on it first of course they where all around 120 so I put the motor on the boat and hooked up the harness and fuel line, hit the primer bulb and the choke and it fired first turn of the key. It want really loud but sound like it was running ok, so I got to looking around to find out why its so loud and I found a hole in the crankcase cover under carb 2. So my plan is to pull the motor back off and put the 1970 crankcase cover on the 69 but the cover is pretty dirty on the inside, and while I'm waiting for parts in the mail, I want to clean the cover up what should I use to get it looking like new again?

Re: 1969 mercury help

Sounds like a plan , but you must determine why that hole is there.------Sounds like something broke inside.----To me it sounds like you have 2 bad motors.-----Please note that these covers are doweled and may or may not be interchangeable.

Need help finding lower end cap with good bearings and seals

I can't seem to find any lower end cap with good bearings and seals for the 1969 merc 500. Anybody know where I can find one? Please help, I have this same question on other forums without having any luck. Thanks.

Edit: Made the question and title more suitable for iboats rules vs just deleting it altogether.

Re: 1969 mercury help

Yeah... I'm not finding anything with either pn.

Totally check with several merc dealers, and try and find that shop that has been around for a while, sometimes you get lucky.

I found several impossible to find merc parts by checking an old shop...

Other than those ideas, keep checking ebay for those part numbers, like once a week or so for the next few months. ;)

Those shops like to clean their inventory on ebay...

What's your serial number of the one you want to fix? Really, what are the serial numbers of both the 69 and the 70? I'm finding one for some serial number ranges, but need know your SN's to be sure.

Re: 1969 mercury help

Here is a link with item #28 1102-1484A 1 replaced by 1102-1484A 3 replaced by 1102-4181A 1 End Cap Assembly
Mercury Marine 500 CYLINDER BLOCK AND CRANKCASE ASSEMBLY Parts

Kinda pricey at $80, but they have 10 in stock.

When you get the SN of the other motor we can figure out if they use the same end cap. The link covers SN 2305101 THRU 2858813, so it may be the same cap if the other motor starts with 26XXXXX.

Hey, GA_boater so do you or anyone else know if this assembly comes compete with seals and bearing I went ahead and ordered it assuming that it does then when I call the guy said he didn't know " cuz there's no pictures haha" but I would really like to know because at that price it's a rip-off to not be fully assembled hints the " assembly part of the description

Re: 1969 mercury help

I don't know what is included in the assembly but no parts are listed for items 31-33, which are the bearing, O-ring and what looks like a seal. Maybe that means they are included. Let us know what you get.

Re: 1969 mercury help

I got the end cap today and it was complete with bearing and the seals the only thing different was the location of the o ring on the old one it was located in the center of the end cap on my new one it's more toward the end where the bottom of the block is whats everyone's opinion on this? Will this make a difference?
