Hello Guys: I have a 1985 60HP Mariner that I have worked all afternoon
on and haven't got the lower unit to come off the mid section. I do have a
factory service manual and have followed the instructions exactly and have
also drove wood wedges between the 2 sections and all I can get is about a
1/4" between the LU and the MS. I also took the 2 covers off of the water
discharge and took a piece of 1/2" oak and a 2 pound maul and tried to
drive the LU off and it want bulge. If I take a piece of 1/2" x 2" flat bar and
put through the water discharge and hit it with the maul, will the LU take
that kind of beating or would that break the LU? Or do I need to take the
midsection off? Listening to any suggestions and thanks beforehand!

HERE I SIT ALL BROKEN HEARTED--JUST CAME TO THIS SIGHT TO BE MADE
SMARTER!

I would expect the steel bar to break stuff. Stick with the wood, you should be able to do sufficient damage with that. Do you have all the bolts out? Should be 5 nuts and a hidden bolt.

Thanks Chris for the reply. Are you saying that there are 6 nuts or bolts all together?
If so that is more than the manual says. There are 2 nuts on the front, 1 bolt on the
top rear in the hole, and 2 nuts on the underside. Is there still another one that I have
not seen?

Speckman, I do not have direct experience on your motor. On my old 1977 inline6 and my '93 V6 Mercs, there is a nut in the very front on top of the antiventilation plate, two slightly behind that one on top as well, and two under the antiventilation plate. There is also a hidden bolt under the zinc Anode. I would expect your gearcase would bolt on the same way.

When you take the bolt out on the top rear of the LU did you remove the torque tab and look up inside that hole for another bolt that holds the LU to the midsection? Not sure about a Mariner, but Mercury motors are that way. Good chance your motor is also. JMO
