I have a 2000 merc 40 hp 2 stroke. While idling yesterday she quit and would not start back up. I got her home and took spark plug out held it to metal and looked to see if it was sparking. I could not see a spark. I have checked all the wires and all seem to be in good shape with nothing melted. I am not much of boat guy, I can do cars but not much with boats. I just figure air fuel fire and i have no fire. I have never had a lick of problems out of this motor. starting from scratch where should i start to diagnose if this is a stator or wire or wiring box? Thanks for your comments

Do you have the s/n of your engine and do you have the service manual to enable you to perform some testing? If you do not have the manual, see my PM to you in the Notifications box at the top of the page.

Probably your coil but may be the stator. I have both parts if you are interested. Check all 3 plugs cause they all have individual coils. If all 3 dont have fire it would then be the stator!
