I drained the lower unit oil in my mariner magnum 3 and it was a gray color. What does this mean?

Depends on what color grey, milky to yellowish is water contaminated and dark grey with silver particles is uh-oh time. Only use synthetic high performance oil in the Xr series gears cases.

If it grey and has silver particles floating in oil or slivers there is internal damage. The small diameter gearcases on the Xr4 and Xr6 are know to crap pinion bearings thus the high performance oil...

This is one of the later larger ones but it does look like that. I guess I better check in to it

Then the original has already took a chit and has been replaced with a standard unit

Pass a magnet through the gray oil....if particles stick to the magnet, you've got wear
