change a 1988 9.9 tiller to remote control

I bought a conversion kit to change a 1988 9.9 hp to remote. A Merc mechanic said that a standard shift control would not work. He said I need one that shifts the cable in the opposite direction. Merc dealer no help, does anyone know for sure before I buy a shift controller?

Hmmmm, not sure about that... Most of the control boxes have cable attaching points top and bottom, allowing for dual direction control... Which control are you planning on using?
