my boat has a matching set of OMC gauges, for years i had a 1991 90hp Merc 2 stroke and everything worked fine. last week i upgraded to a 1999 125hp Merc 2 stroke and now the tach is not working right. sometimes not at all. does this newer motor require a different tach?

The 125 should have a Voltage Regulator with the rectifier combined whereas your 90 had a separate rectifier

Do you have the s/n of your engine as I have the service manual and can send you a copy.

You'll find 2 yellow wires coming down from the stator (under the flywheel) that go into the regulator. If you have the gray tacho wire plugged into the gray wire on the regulator, try removing it and plugging it into one of the yellow wires... Should work then... (BTW, needs to be plugged with one of the yellows, not instead of. ie, spliced into.)

Yes.

That s/n comes up as:

Serial No: 0G911197 Model No: 1125412VD

Parts and Service Bulletin List for s/n 0G911197:

If you PM me with an email address, I will send you a copy of the manual.

Re: another mercury tach question...

You're now crossing wires. All you're doing is disconnecting the gray wire and connecting it to one of the yellow wires...

Don;

The file is only 14.5mb. I will try again this morning and if necessary, will split it into two emails.
