2002 Mercury 40hp 2 Cyl 2 stroke. running ruff at idle. Idles good for a few seconds and then it coughs. I have cleaned the carb. Idle and high speed are clear. I know i have a fuel issue. What else can cause this idle issue.

Reed Valves.

Not reeds. This is what is always blamed by the unlearned. Been there, done that years ago myself. Pulled my reeds and they were flawless.

More likely you have a lean condition at idle which makes it cough and die. First thing to try is open up the idle mixtures 1/4 or 1/2 turn.

Dave1027 thanks for the reply. I agree on the reed valves. I was just out of options. I had gone through the carb several times and the Pump. I finally checked my fuel hoses and found the inside of the hose had separated and all the glue was screwing up the works. thanks again. sometimes it helps to bounce ideas off someone else.
