1964 Mercury 1000 lower unit on 1976 1500?

I had a 1964 Mercury 1000 on my boat, and I just pulled the lower unit, painted, replaced water pump, and new oil. Then I decided to replace the 1000 with a 1976 1500. The 1500 needs a lower unit, will my '64 unit work? The lower units I find on ebay usually say from 1967 and up for interchange...but it looks the same to me. Is the '64 compatible with a '76?

I don't think so. I believe Studding is different.

If its a 64 model the shift shaft is different and the water pickup is in different location..

Alright, thanks for the info. What years does the '64 lower work with? Did they change it in '67?
