My dad and I recently swapped out a 150 Johnson for a Black Max and we are having problems with getting any form of spark in any cylinder. We have 12v ignition hot via the purple lead on the motor and have removed the black and yellow leads for the kill switch with no luck. We also used the CDI troubleshooting procedures that I found online but nothing tested faulty. I know the next step should be switch boxes but I dont believe yet that they both could have gone bad at the same time while sitting on a stand. Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Double check tha little in-line fuse above tha solenoid. Might look ok but sometimes they aren't makin' good contact on both ends.............

Try disconnecting both yellow stator wires from the rectifier and see if you then have spark. I think a bad rectifier can cause no spark. Also, check your yellow wires going all the way up to the stator, mine were literally falling apart with the coating falling off exposing bare wires, this could lead to one of the wires grounding out on the block.

Also, dont discount that you might have two bad switch boxes, from what i have heard, one bad box can lead to the second going out as well.

The motor is labeled a 150hp Black Max but the sticker with the serial number says Mariner Outboards and the serial number search brings up a 135 Mercurys website. Can someone verify the s/n? 0C185152

135/150. Difference in hp is gonna be mainly carbs and/or just jetting of tha carbs.. Merc website cause its built by Mercury. Merc/Mariner V6 are tha same thing..............Somewhere along that time they even quit paintin' tha power head grey.......

Comes up as:

MARINER - (135 H.P. (1989 ))
Serial No: 0C185152 Model No: 7135427PD This was how it left the factory.

Parts and Service bulletin List for s/n 0C185152:

I appreciate the help but now I am even more confused. We have been using a mariner service manual but nothing has been lining up including carb jet sizes and wiring. I recently ordered Clymers b726 hoping for some clarification but I may need to get the actual service manual.
