15 hp mariner shift cam installation

I changed the water pump assembly on my 15 hp mariner and when i screwed the shift shaft into the shift shaft cam it just came out of the lower unit. how is it reinstalled?

It fits into a square slot in the LU. Once it is pulled up enough to pop it out it is very hard to get it back in place with out taking the water pump back off.. You may be missing a C clip on the shift shaft, thats there to stop it from being pulled out of place once the water pump is installed.

To re-install you will probably have to push the cam follower towards the prop. On mine (a 30 HP w/similar setup), when the cam comes out of the LU the follower sometimes pops forward (towards the tiller). You can push it back with a screwdriver.

Thanks for the help Guys. I'll see if I can get the shift cam back in place now that I know what to look for.
