Starter brushes so clogged with grease that they weren't spring loaded any more!

Before I realized this I had replaced all the wiring (bar the two short one on the starter but their resistance was good.)

This seem to fix the problem for about 5 minutes but it was back to the usual slow cranking again.

Hook the battery directly up to the starter and found the same slow cranking.

After dismantling the starter I cleaned the brushes which were caked into their casing not spring loaded any more.

Anyone come across this before and did cleaning fix the slow crank? Haven't tested it yet will do this evening

thanks

Yep that will cure a slow crank, The brushes in the starter need to move freely in the holders. The springs at the ends push the brushes down to maintain constant contact with the commutator thingy. DONT OIL THE BRUSHES, you will ruin them, just make sure they move properly. Also start looking for replacement brushes, cuz im sorry to say, you will be back in there doing it again
