Well you probably need to make or buy a spanner tool. Not worth cracking the gear case. We had to drill out a spanner nut one day but we got it out. It will be hard to get the new one in regardless, because it needs to be torqed down to spec. I've seen people using a hmer and screwdriver to spin the old nut off and new nut on, but I wouldn't try it.
