2001 125 Mercury Elpto

Pinion gear is stripped on the starter, I can't find any numbers on my starter to get the right part number for the starter gear, it's an 8 tooth gear, does anyone know where I can find one that will fit?

After doing a little more research, this is what I found at Mercury Marine

It's the 1125412YD, I tried to take the old gear off but it has become a nightmare,doesn't seem to be a way to hold the shaft ?

Normally to remove the nut you hold the armature shaft with one wrench and take the nut off the top with another. Have you removed the two long through bolts and the armature from the starter frame yet?

Do you have a manual? If not, post your engine s/n and if you send me a PM with an email address, I will send you a copy.

Thanks for all your help....
I have taken the long bolts out but haven't removed the armature yet, was afraid of stripping the shaft or busting something else.

Well if you have the long bolts out, remove the commutator end cap and pull the armature.

Just be careful when you pull the end cap that you account for the brush springs.
