Shift Linkage Mercury 30

I changed the water pump and am now trying to reconnect the lower unit to the rest of the motor. I cannot get the linkage lined up right and i keep having issues. When i bolt it all together the shifter is stuck in forward and i cannot move it at all. Any help?

Ok problem was that I did not have the linkage on the lower unit in neutral and in addition to having the shifter in neutral. This was a 1998 mercury 30hp 2 stroke direct injection for anyone wondering. Original problem was motor wasnt peeing turned out to be a clogged pee hole hose not the impeller!

I have the same issue right now with my 1989 30 hp. Can you describe how you put the lower unit into neutral? I can handle shifting the upper part of the linkage, but I'm not really sure what to do with the linkage on the lower unit. I'm thinking that I'll have to play with the prop and the innards behind the prop, but I'm too much of a rookie to really know what to do.
