Hello, I have a 1980 Mercury 50 hp outboard I just purchased I replaced the water pump and impeller. I noticed that at the top of the shaft while I was putting it back in there were two black female splined sleeves laying in the housing. I know they go on the end of the shaft but they are both shaped different. If anyone could help me that would be great. I need to know if there is a specific way they go on?

You have not provided your engine s/n but if you are sure it is a 1980, here is the parts list:

45/50 H.P. - Mercury, Mercruiser, Force, etc. Parts Lookup

See items 32/33 under GEAR HOUSING (DRIVE SHAFT)

Here is a link to the condensed version of the Clymer manual. Download it soonest to your computer as the link is short lived.

Small Engine Repair Reference Center Home: MERCURY - MERCURY FOUR-CYLINDER MODELS (1969-1989).

From page 287:

Later models are equipped with two
seals which fit over upper drive shaft
splines. Install splined seal on drive
shaft splines with splined seal end
toward top of drive shaft, then install remaining
seal with small end towards top
of drive shaft.

Gerry thanks, the serial number 5796423 and I think I got it. The sleeves is what I have on the end of the shaft. This site is very nice I've done several water pumps and this one was a little different It threw me off.
