Been reading the posts for a couple of weeks now while mechanic checked out new (to me) pontoon boat. New to Mercury outboards but ran Evinrude and Johnson motors for several years about 30 years ago.
The outboard is a 1991 40 HP apparently model ELPTO, S/N D012547 with Quick Silver throttle/shifter/key switch.
After reading posts I was able to get it started but it took awhile. Once running the fast idle lever didn't seem to do anything to motor speed and didn't feel like it was connected to anything. Any suggestions?
Also, does pushing the key in set the choke or should I hold it in during starting?
And now for the dummy question. How do I remove the cowl to get to the the motor?
