I have an older Mercury 60hp 2 stroke. I was getting it ready for the season, and noticed the little cap on top of the lower unit right above the prop on top of the flange that goes over the prop. There is a round hole with a cap in it, does the cap have to cover the entire hole and if so what can I replace it with. Mine looks like a good chunk of one side broke off and leaves the hole partially open. Is this ok?

You're lucky, you still have part of the plug left. Most don't have one because they fall off or don't get put back on after removing the trim tab/anode. Not needed, it just covers the hole to get to the trim tab bolt.

thanks for the reply. That was exactly what I wanted to hear. I actually found the broken half laying on the floor of the garage. I share the space with my wife's pottery equipment and she must have bumped it. I am going to glue the pieces back together and refit it in the hole, but really nice to know that if it leaks a little it will be ok.

Thanks again and I really appreciate it.

Water gets in there whether you have a cap or not. It isn't a sealed area.
