I just replaced the cables in my 1978 bayliner after the old ones were rusted out. I've been trying to get the linkage adjusted but just can't get the shifter right. Is there an initial setting for the cables? then one could fine tune from that?

Sure, adjustment is real easy. Put motor into neutral, put control into neutral. Now adjust barrell nut on shift cable to fit into the clamp. That's it.

I believe I got that ok, it's the throttle settings that are throwing me off . I have the throttle set so the bump stops are touching when the lever is down. The motor will run but I don't have any top end and reverse is having a hard time meshing because the rpms go up to much in reverse.
