Hello I wanted to know if a Gear housing assembly (lower end) from a 1965 will fit on a 1963 6hp Merc 60? My housing is cracked bad and I found a 65, will it work? Please let me know as soon as possible. When I look up the part numbers they seem to be the same for 1963-1968. Thank you guys

Thank you. I would do that but the 65 is out of state.

Ask for the serial number on the out of state unit. There was a change at number 1916138 and up. My 1963 Merc 500 lower is slightly different from the mid 60's units but with little modification they fit.

Best 75/70 bucks you can spend keeping this old Merc running.....Manuals John S. Mcintosh - Tools, Manuals, Service Aids- Mercury Marine Brand Service Manuals

For the drive shaft you'll need the tools for it... John S. Mcintosh - Lower Unit Tools

While you're in there, reseal it.... LOWER UNIT SEAL KIT

I know the dollars add up quick but do it right the first time or you'll have a nice pile of scrap...... Post a "help" on Johns Old Mercurys", perhaps on of the crew has the tools and can rework it for you.

Does not look like any of the tools or kits are for my motor.

Here it is, the 1965 gear housing mounted to the 1963 motor, fit was perfect and exactly the same. If you look closely at the pictures you can see the same part number stamped inside the housings.

I don't know yet if I'm going to go purest on it yet. Thinking I'm going to match my LoneStar paint scheme. Also don't know that my rebuild will be as nice as your 50hp but Ill do my best.

LoneStar? No kidding, what model? My first boat was a 1959 LoneStar Arrow. Great boats and built like a tank.
