My 650 mercury motor Doesnt want to idle

Hey Captains,
Help a sailor out.
I tried taking my 650 motor out yesterday for the first time. Well needless to say i didnt get far because my motor didnt want to idle in neutral. Any thoughts on what might be causing the problem? Is it me? Should i give it more gas and let it warm up?

Ryan,
Many of us out here have "Old Mercs". Please supply some basic information what asking a question, as we are not familiar with your motor.
Make, Model, Serial,Year.
There are many reasons she wont idle some are easy, some are complex.
When was the last time her carburetors were cleaned and rebuilt?
Many more questions after this.........

Hey BGC,

Thanks for the carburetor suggestion. We cleaned it out and found a bunch of grim had built up. It now idles great for me.
I will add my motor details in my future posts. for reference if you care my motor is a 1968 mercury 4 cylinder serial number 2804047.
