Figured it out. In case anyone else ever needs the help: pull slack on the kill switch wires, then pull the whole handle/shaft assembly out. The end of the shaft slides into the female recess of the cable spool. My problem is that the plastic male end that fits into the cable spool recess is rotating on the shaft. I'm going to try drilling the plastic and metal shaft and inserting a roll pin to prevent rotation of the plastic end on the metal shaft.

I believe this thing is a '96, anyway. I removed the rubber grip. However, I can't figure out how to remove the handle under the grip. I suspect I have to pry something up, but don't know where and don't want to break it. this handle doesn't have the screw that retains it. There's nothing. Was hoping for some help.
Thanks,
