Impeller Replacement on 1999 Mercury 8 hp

I was able to get the lower unit off and the water pump opened. Are there any washers that go on either side of the impeller itself when mounted on the shaft. My impeller kit did not have any in it. I only saw a little glue like substance on the upper side of the impeller that looked melted. Was this a washer or seal at one time? Also, when putting the lower unit back together, is there any kind of sealant that needs to be placed on the mating edges of the engine cases? Thanks for your help!!!
