07 Mercury 8hp four stroke tight timing belt

Working on a 2007 8hp merc four stroke that took out the top main crank bearing, the timing belt is banjo tight and I don't think this is right, I put a new crank and bearings in it but I am afraid to start it thinking that it is going to happen again. I have a new timing belt on order hoping that it might not be as tight. Anyone ever have this issue?
