I own a 1968 350 35 H.P. mercury short shaft with gear problems. I want to know if the lower units from 35/40 HP mercs from the 70s and 80's will fit this?

From my experience, lower units for these model years are harder to find. My 68 Merc 500 wouldn't accept anything past 1970 or anything earlier than 1968. They made a slight change in the distance between the main studs. (later models) It was like 3/16" difference. You also need to pay attention to the reverse lock shift shaft cam. That was design was changed too. (67 wouldn't work)

Thanks for the input. I am visiting an outboard junkyard that has over 400 parts motors tomorrow, hopefully I will get lucky and find a match in good shape.
