Mercury Smartcraft monitor backlight works intermittently

I have the Mercury Smart Craft monitor (v. 5).

For some reason I can not get the color back light system to function. The monitor works but it is difficult to see because of black lettering on a gray background.

Last night I turned the ignition key to AC and suddenly it came up with the back light functioning perfectly - and it worked all last night while I turned the system on and off. Today when I turn on the AC the back light again does not function. I called Mercury and my local dealer and both have no idea what is happening.

Does anyone have any ideas? As it is the gauge is useless since I can't read it without a flashlight.

I found the problem - which may or may not apply to other owners of the Smart Craft monitor (v. 6 my mistake above). When I turned off the "auto" night background feature everything works fine. Although this was tested in a dark garage as well as in the sun there seems to be a glitch with my monitor. Hope this helps others.
