1992 40hp Mercury hard to start .

Any help would be greatly welcomed on this . Hard to start ,have to spray gas in carbs ,I do not hear a click when key is pushed in , should there be a click(note key is in the on position when pushed in) ? How do I check .

Sounds like your choke is not working. That is if you do have such a device on your 40 HP engine. If you have an electric choke, then yes you should hear a click when you push to choke at your key switch (only when in the run and/or start position)... Check the choke and wiring going to it...

That engine should have an enricher or a manual primer bulb. If you have used the key to coke it before, then it will have an enricher system.

If you PM me with your engine s/n and an email address, I can send you a copy of the manual with test instructions for the enricher.

It has a fuel enrichner (I may be saying this wrong) not a choke ,but should I still hear a click?And how do I check this ?

Seems to be a small problem with that s/n as it comes up as:

MERCURY - ( 60 H.P. (1992 ))
Serial No: 0D142687 Model No: 1060412MD

Can you double check?

60 is correct ,40 is stuck in my mind for some canny reason .
