Mercury cooling issue

I just tried to service the water pump on my 1970's 3hp two-stroke mercury outboard and when I disconnected the lower leg the copper pipe that carries the water up to the engine came loose. How do I reconnect it? Also, I'm having a hard time fitting the lower leg back on to the outboard. It will slide in just fine until there is about a centimeter left to go then get stuck. I'm hoping to get it put back together soon so I can enjoy it this weekend!

Using the serial number, HP, and year, look up a schematic online ...you'll see how it all goes back together. Did the copper pipe come loose up high in the engine? ..it should fit back into a sleeve; the drive shaft splines have to line up with those in the motor ..then it'll slide back together. It's important to get everything lined up right. If you're going to be working on this motor, invest in a manual. What do you mean by "service" the water pump -did you actually do anything to it?
