I have a mid 80s mariner and i have been having some trouble with it overheating. it has a strong stream out of the tell tale and as far as i can tell it doesnt have a thermostat. i was wondering if anybody had any ideas as to what might be causing it. thanks.

Re: 30 hp mariner over heating

If this is the same engine you were talking about before but never confirmed the s/n:

http://forums.iboats.com/mercury-ma...de-mariner-thermostat-591868.html#post4105240

and we presume that it is 689-410970, then that s/n comes up as:

30 EL 689-418520 - 689-420354 1988

From here:

Mariner 25-30 hp, produktions?rslista, modellguide

Parts Listing:

30 HP - Mercury, Mercruiser, Force, etc. Parts Lookup

If you look under CRANKCASE AND CYLINDER HEAD at item 16, you will see that it does have a thermostat.

What overheating signs are you getting ? Anything else happening at the same time ?

serial number is 898, not 689. smoke starts coming out of the motor and eventually it shuts down. starts fine. pees fine.

Is it smoke or steam you're getting ? And where's it coming out of the motor ?
