I am converting a remote to a tiller. Where in the name of dickens does the Nuetral Safety Switch go????? The gear case is shifted by a lever on the right side of the motor (right side of boat).

Help! Where does it go?

It comes in pin 7 of the remote harness from the ignition switch in the remote control. In the start position the ign. sw puts 12v on the yellow-red wire (on my '02 engine) which goes directly to the hot control terminal of the starting solenoid. If the remote is not in N, this line is open circuited by the physical position of the shift lever.

With no remote, you need some way to energize the start solenoid. If you have a key on the engine then you will have to trace the wire back from the solenoid starting terminal (small one...the other small one goes to ground...the block) to see if it is interrupted by any kind of mechanical device attached to the shifter or does it just go to a switch that connects it to 12v when you want to start.

Nothing magic about the process other than the start switch needs to be spring loaded so that when the engine fires, you immediately let go of the switch and the solenoid will open. You could go to radio shack and get a 15 amp SPST spring loaded switch and make the hook up if nothing else an environmentally sealed/resistant switch would be best.
