Make shore the forward gear lever is in neutral and also the gearbox prior to putting gearbox back on. Hope that helps. I done that once on my motor :)

Theres a splined shaft that can easerly be bumped near the water pump. You may have bumped it when fixing pump. Drop the gearbox put it back neutral along with forward lever control, then all should be good.
Cheers

Thanks, it will be tommorrow before I can try this out, I hope it works! Just bought the boat and thought it had major problems with it bogging on take-off but seemed to be a stator screw that was too long that wouldnt allow timing to advance, so got it running great but needed a new water pump, now this!!

Check that the entire shift linkage at the top end hasn't loosened or got out of neutral ...all set screws/pins all tight ?

OK, Thanks, will check,
1. in forward prop locks at ccw and rachets clockwise(sounds like racheting)

2. in neutral does same
3. reverse does same

What you state in your last post only means that the LU is locked in forward gear.

Normal Operation of the LU is as follows:

Using finger pressure only, ie; do not try to force the prop.

Forward: Prop will ratchet when turned CW, will not turn CCW
Neutral: Prop will rotate freely in either direction
Reverse: Prop will not turn in either direction

What is the s/n of your engine?
