Hello, today i purchased a boat with a 1987 20hp Mariner, the electric start works but the pull start does not, when i pull the rope it just pulls out with slight resistance and the spring pulls it back in, not catching the fly wheel at all for what i can tell.. What could be causing this? Thank you - Tyler

Remove the pull starter and check for a worn pin or clip that may need no more than greese. if it is sheered or disfigured then a new part if available must be purchesed or you can check ebay for the unavailable part. My best suggestion is use or fix the starter and set up the key switch and battery for it and the charging system if it applies.

Re: 1987 20hp Mariner Loose pull start.

You haven't included the s/n of your engine but if you are sure it is a 1987, here is the parts list:

Mercury Parts, 18/20/25 H.P. (XD)

See the manual starter under STARTER ASSEMBLY, MANUAL

If you PM me with an email address, I can send you the chapter of the service manual which deals with the manual starter.
