I recently purchased a boat with a 1985 Mercury 150 Black Max. It has loads of power. But, it's a bit grumpy to start and idles a bit rough. Occasionally it'll die on idle. I have a few questions, as I know that the guy I bought it from was not a mechanical guy.

What's the proper way to check the timing? At idle? At a certain rpm?

The motor sounds rich to me.....what's the best carb set up?

Any other suggestions to make this thing purr?

Thanks for any and all advice!

Put a new set of plugs in then get a manual and follow the procedures for doing a link & sync. Its important to do it in the steps given.

Thanks. I kind of figured as much. Can I get a manual online? What's the quickest way to get a manual?
