The two lines from the fuel pump leak where the rubber is crimped into the brass threaded connectors. Maybe eaten by ethanol.

I can't seem to find replacement lines, for this year, so I'm wondering if using barb fitting and clamps, will get the job done

Sounds good to me. My current Merc uses nylon tie wraps which work just fine. Automotive fuel line would work but since it is reinforced, the tie wrap needs to be a ss hose clamp to get adequate pressure on the fitting. I had one of those back in the late '70's. Great engine, no problems. Only thing that bugged me was the cowling was too close to the starter handle and it was awkward for me to grasp it so that I could pull it.
