Will there be parts available for my 1987 30 hp mariner?

I am supposed to buy what I think is a 1987 Mariner 30hp today for $500 from someone. It says made in Japan on it and is made I yamaha I believe. My concern is parts for this thing, are they available? is this a decent deal? i am supposed to make the purchase in a couple hours, and feel a little worried about this.

I don't think you will have any problems with parts for quite some time and most are readily available. They are good engines and when you get the s/n, let us know and we can get you the parts listing.

On another thread someone said 1986 but some of the letters don't match. My serial number is 30elo 689L 417514, The 1986 closest match on this page http://www.storesonline.com/site/573683/page/608045 is 30A EL 689-416199 - 1986. There is an A after the 30 which I don't know what that means and there is no O after the 30elo. I don't have oil injection on this motor that I can see so I don't know why it shows an O on my serial number

I've got a 1982 Japanese made Mariner. The "consumable" parts (impeller, seals, etc.) seem to be readily available. i-boats may have these but it is hard to determine from their parts listings. Crowley Marine seems to be a good source that lets you access the actual parts manual for your motor and locate the parts.

The big stuff, such as engine block castings, lower units, etc. seem to be hard to locate.

Your engine s/n comes up as:

30A EL 689-416199 - 1986 all numbers higher than 689-41699 up to 689-108308 are 1986 w689-108309 beginning 1987.

The A is just the Yamaha designation EL of course is for Long shaft, Electric start.
