I think I have spent 3-4 hours on the interenet trying to find a year with no answer. The model is 30ELo code 689 L serial # 417514

Your engine model number 7030717 shows it to be a early 1987 MARINER SANSHIN 30 ELO.

You can google the model number for a parts catalog.

Even though the site below shows it to be a 1986.
30A EL 689-416199 - 1986

how do you get the model number 7030717?
Also what i marked down from the seller was 30ELo and the stats for the one you r showing is 30A EL, I don't understand

The serial number and model number is registered with mercury marine that way from new.

E = ELECTRIC START
L = LONG SHAFT (20")
O = OIL INJECTION

To find the year of an engine, all you need to do is find the serial number range that is between your actual serial number like i did above.

So what is it then? a 1986 or 1987? I need to get a new fuel pump for it so I wan't to make sure I get the right year for it. I am assuming that the fuel pump will be the same anyway for the 1986 and 1987 model?

It's an 87, And your right, it doesn't matter if it were a 86, the Mercury Marine fuel pump part number for both years is 43113T FUEL PUMP ASSEMLBY. MSRP:$95.43.
