1986 Mercury 75 hp goes reverse in forward gear and reverse in reverse gear

My 1986 Mercury 75 hp goes reverse in forward gear and reverse in reverse gear. The "original" stator and switch box were recently replaced and the motor performed perfectly for most of the first day on the water. When the problem developed the reverse in forward gear was sluggish compared to reverse in reverse gear.

I couldn't see any other posts with this topic, but I can't believe this is the first occurance. Anyone had this set of symptoms? If so, what was the solution?
