Hello everybody - great site!

looking for a little help please -

I have a new to me 1967 Mercury 500 50 hp 4 cyl motor and I need to check the water pump / impeller. How in the heck do I get the lower unit off?

Thanks !!

Put your controls in FWD and leave them there when you drop it down. Remove the bolts on the lower unit that you can see, then remove the skeg to find the one remaining bolt that you can't see, it should drop right off. BE SURE that the stepped cog that is around the shift shaft either stays on, or mark it to reinstall it in the exact position again. If you don't do that, your reverse lock will be out of whack. Sometimes the lower units get stuck after so many years, but my '77 dropped right off.

ok - thanks everybody so far!

well, i dropped the lower unit and replaced the impeller no problem. However , now i can't shift it. I did put it in forwrd, dropped lower unit, replaced impeller, put it all back together, and buttoned it up. Now I can't shift out of forward.

what now?
