Unknown mercury

I recieved this old merc in a box. After a week of evenings I have it up and running but have no idea what she is and after trying to look it up and calling my local shops I am still confused. I have been told it is a 35hp from 83 or a 40hp from 86. The serial # is 7173539 and ideas?

If it is a two cylinder, it is a Canadian built engine:

40 1981 2 5556230 7144763 (7144763 being the starting s/n for 1981. As 1982 begins with a higher s/n, yours is a 1981).
