Hi,

I'm new to this forum and marine world :) recently purchased a boat powered by a mercury 50hp big foot 4 stroke.

I tested it recently at sea and engine runs fine in all situations except at very low rpm / speed. Just after I put it in gear (happens on both forward and reverse), at very very low speeds (i.e. throttle lever just past the "shift point" into forward gear and boat moving an average human walking speed) the engine starts making a harsh knock and jerks up and down. I never really let it continue happen to see if it eventually stalls because it sounds / looks pretty bad. So i just either give it a little more throttle or switch it back to idle. With just a little more throttle in runs fine all the way up to full throttle.

Any ideas? suspecting it's something to do with the prop or not switching completely into gear - as if it keeps going in and out of gear and each time doing that "clunk" noise??

Appreciate your thoughts!

Thanks
