Just got off the phone with Mercury customer service. (that's an oxymoron) Motor caught on fire at regulator. Only 40 hours on engine. Mercury rep and repair shop tech told me that this engine had a recall for defective voltage regulators but my engine's serial # was too far out. Mercury basicly told me to go pack sand and would not stand behind defective product. If anyone has one of these engines you would be wise to carry a good fire extinguisher and look for smoke.

In the UK, they sell a new regulator and a different manifold that it fits on (a cooler area)., The complete kit is less than the regulator alone. But the engine is 8 years old.
