So I picked up another boat and took it out on the water for the 1st time today. here are my problems with the motor
Problem #1- the motor has great compression in all 4 cylinder but will not start unless i shoot some engine starter fluid in it, then it starts rite up on muffs and in the water.
Problem #2- this is a combination of issues so when i put it in gear it will stall almost instantaneously unless push the throttle foward realy fast. it will stay at a No wake speed of 5-6 mph but once i try to give it more gas the motor starts spurtering and going up in down in rpms about + or - 5-800 rpms. when i try go anymore the say a little more the 1/4 throttle the engine will bogg and stall out. So really i can only go about 5-6 mph and if i try go faster it will stall. I took a look at the carbs to verify both throttle plates are opening since my last mercury engine this was my problem. I have ran a whole bottle of seafoam through it with no success as well. I noticed theres seems to be some fuel/oil around the outside underneath the carbs as if maybe the carbs are leaking fuel? and also some fuel/oil around the fuel line connecting to the fuel pump.
My prop is also a 21p, to me it seams kind of big but i cant wot throttle it to measure the rpms but it seems like its the original or atleast an original replacement prop. apparently the guy that owned it let it sit in the water for a while(freshwater) without running it on a regular basis. My guess would be to rebuild the carbs and replace the fuel lines since maybe it may be causeing a fuel pressure problem or that since the carbs maybe leaking its causing a vacuum issue. If you guys can point me in the rite direction I would deff appreciate it. Could i get away with take off the carbs and soaking it in acetone over night if the carbs are not leaking?
I will try get some pictures of everything before i take the carbs off tommorrow to do some more investigating so you guys can give me some info.
