1967 Mercury 200 water on top plug

[Nezlugh]

A friend picked up a Hustler jon type boat with this motor, after some minor tinkering it started up. There is a small amount of water coming from the side of the top plug hole about the 11:00 position. Seems to be a slot with a hole half way down the plug wall.

Neither one of us is familiar with this engine any info would be helpful.

Go to a parts supplier web site and pull up the drawings. I think you will find that the motor has a head cover which circulates water over the head. It is probably the gasket that is leaking. Tightening the cover bolts may effect a seal.
