Thanks everyone, for your help up to this point.
The story so far-
1979 Mercury Mariner 70hp 3 cyl 2 cycle. Runs fine at spring test. Take it out on the water, and the engine does not get over 3000 rpm.
Bring it back in. Replaced carb needle and seat (was leaking gas when priming), replaced fuel pump diaphragm (was crunchy), replaced fuel line and primer bulb (was also kinda crunchy). Checked out all the electrical checks in the Seloc manual. Stator tested all in spec. Trigger was all in spec. Switchbox was all in spec. Spark plugs were pristine.
Took it out again. Same problem (but at least it stared easier, and ran better up to 3100 rpm. Adjusted timing on the lake, checked spark and fuel pressure. Both good.
Brought it back in. Now I'm looking at the troubleshooting sheets from CDI Electronics. Recommended replacing the rectifier (replaced with the Radio Shack one, cheap fix). Tested the engine. Started up great. Checked voltage while running across stator blue (low speed) to engine ground. Started off okay, had a dip around 1200-1500 rpm, then came up nicely.
Checked voltage while running across stator red (high speed) to engine ground. Nada. If anything, it was negative voltage.
So, aside from dropping more cash for a stator that was just replaced two years ago, what troubleshooting can I do on the stator to determine if it IS the stator, as opposed to a trigger, issue?
Thank you
