Hi everyone, I purchased a 1984 TideCraft bass boat last year and it came with a Mercury 1400 inline 6. I am new to boating and am in the middle of replacing the stringers and transom. I was wondering if the 1400 would be ok for the boat or do I need to look for something smaller the boat is rated for up to a 100hp.Here are some pics of the boat and motor any suggestions will be appreciated.

If your overpowering it.. and since your redoing the transom and stringer.. i would beef them up..

That thing will skip on the water..

Keep in mind that your boat's rating is propshaft HP and your engine is rated at the crankshaft. Your 1400 is putting out about 115 at the prop, so you are only 15 over.

That lower doesnt pull out 25 HP. In any case its the sticker the water cops look at . Not what you think it might have.

Having said that I have a 150 on my 16 footer.

The 1400 and 1500 are rated at the powerhead not the prop. A 1400 will put out about 115-120hp at prop and a 1500 will put out about 120-125 at prop.

Thanks, I did not know that.

Thanks, This is my first boat and haven't had it in the water yet. When I first got it the carb's were gummed up. cleaned all three set them to factory specs and it fires right up and runs fine in a barrel of water. Is there anything I need to know about this motor before I take it out it will be a month or so before I am done with the strings and transom.

Thanks will I get a ticket or anything if I get stopped on the water?

Did it pump water ok? You really should change that impeller if you haven't done that yet. I also redid a bass boat a couple years back. there are tons of tips in the restoration section but here's my thread.

Thanks for the link. When I bought the boat the guy told me he had just replaced the water pump, so when I got it started it was stuck in first gear. i removed the lower unit and he didn't get the shifter shafts connected. I put both in neutral and put it back on and goes through gears fine now. Probably should have put a new impeller in while I had it apart.

Your'e going to lose about 15 HP with the lower . No more.

As far as a ticket. You might. Depends on your state and where you boat at. Some states have enforcement Nazis and some couldnt care less as long as you have your horn and life jackets. Ive never been ticketed on mine for going over the nameplate HP but I know people that have been.
