Hi - have recently bought '73 mercury 500 and having unsiezed it and got control unit working (with great advice from some of you) - on first attempt to start no joy. There is a spark on on 4 plugs but not that big. I was told by someone that the thunderbolt ignition should produce a significant spark - is this the case? Is it simply something to do with the fact that, in my haste, I didn't connect up the kill switch.(surely there'd be no spark at all if the kill with where activated?)
I'm think it's probably down to fuel not getting through though. There seem to be a lot of threads suggesting fuel problems if the outboard has been sitting for a while with stuck float needles etc. If this is the case is there any quick fix? Is it possible to remove the float chambers (fiddly!) without major surgery
Thanks for any help - need to get a manual me thinks!
PS there is also a little oil escaping from around the prop. Does this need a new seal?
