115hp Wont start when you turn the key, but will if you jump the selenoid??? plz help

Hi, I have a 1979 115 hp mecury/mariner outboard and it will not start when I turn the key. But I have jump the starter with a cable running from the battery and it starts fine. I have notice there is some corrsion on sum of the cables coming from the quick connect to the selenoid. But i cant firgure it out, can anyone tell me where to go from here or where to start looking for the promblem. Thanks

Check the netural switch first ( wiggle the shifter ). If you put a volt meter on the solinoid ( small wire - not ground) and turn the key, do you have 12 volts? If so, you have a bad solinoid. If you don't have 12 volts here, you either have a bad (+) connection to your key switch, a bad key switch or rotted wiring between the switch and solinoid.
