I have a 88 25 HP electric start and gudging from what I found in my search I can't expect to many charging amps from the alternator but I want to check to make sure it is charging. How can I check to see what my alternator is putting out?

Re: Battery

Hey, Tom.

You need a voltmeter. If you don't have one connected just connect a multimeter (set to measure up to 20VDC) across the battery terminals. With the engine off you should read 12.6V on a fully charged battery. When you run the engine the voltage should be higher, depending on the state of charge. Expect 13.5V to about 16V if the charging system is working.
