I bought a 15 foot Glasspar which has a 1976 Mercury 850cc 85hp outboard.
I need a service manual. Where would one go to get a factory service manual on this engine?

I have a drip of oil coming from a weephole up on the lower unit. The mechanic believes it is a shifter seal, he said to keep checking the oil level and see him in the fall.

He said about 2 hours to RnR that.

With a service manual could a novice attempt this?

Smell the oil that is dripping. if it stinks it is gear oil and you need to fix it. Likely by installing a new waterpump base seal and gaskets. If it smells like gas or oil, it is residual fuel and is not an issue.

Mercury Service manuals are avail on e-BAy and places on the web...

That s/n comes up as:

85 850 4-cyl 4092965 4366801 1975 USA

From here:

Service Manual P/N: 90-75512

http://www.chrysleroutboards.com/more_service_manuals.htm

In the interim, here is a copy of the condensed version of the Clymer manual. Let the page load for several seconds and download soonest to your computer as the link is short lived:

That oil in the picture is weeping out of the shift shaft seal cavity and looks like gearcase oil. The hole is there to allow water to drain, rather than freeze and damage the case. It also collects oil if the shift shaft seal is leaking and drains out there.

Here is the parts listing for your engine:

http://www.crowleymarine.com/mercury-outboard/461.cfm

See the shift shaft seal as item 45.

This is a job you could do but involves making or buying a tool to remove the bushing assy, item 44 in the same link. The seal sits in the bushing. The shaft splines must also be taped to install the seal over the splines to prevent any damage to the seal.
Because the seal is damaged, it is allowing gearcase oil to seep past it and draining out the weep hole. If you wanted to check it, you could drop the lower unit and you will probably see the oil on top of the shift shaft area. At least you will be able to verify it is the seal.

I might try it myself. Thanks for the links, I downloaded the PDF.
My man who does my boats (I have several) put this boat together over the winter. I snagged it while waiting for a stern drive to be repaired on my ski boat.

It was/is a very clean 65 Glasspar just like the one we as kids had back in the 70's, where I learned to ski on. For the nostalgia thingy and the price was right ($1,000) I grabbed it.

It really is a blast. I was scooting across the lake up near the mouth of the river and hit a submerged log. I notices this leak about a week later. Might be coincidental might not.

My mechanic said 2 hours to RnR it. $200 bucks or less. I might hire him out because I want him to tune the carbs a bit better. The boat is out on the lake at least once a week now. I tow it with a 88 Vanagon 2.1 Syncro van. Probably does not weight in at 900 lbs or less.

Thanks for the links, I am ordering some material to educate myself on this.
